LG Electronics Inc. is considering the plan of integrating Llama, the large-scale language model (LLM) released by Meta Platforms Inc., into its home appliances in a move to bolster on-device artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.

Meta’s Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg visited LG headquarters in Seoul on Wednesday and had a meeting with LG Corp. Vice Chairman Kwon Bong-seok, LG Electronics CEO Cho Joo-wan, and LG Electronics’ home entertainment division head Park Hyung-se.

Discussions centered on the incorporation of on-device AI using Llama, along with the development and manufacturing of mixed reality (MR) headsets.

Industry insiders expect an expansion of a cooperative relationship between the two companies toward an AI alliance.

“We discussed the optimal method to integrate Llama into our devices, totaling over 500 million units,” Cho said.

The partnership is seen as paving the way for LG Electronics to transition into an AI service provider, signaling heightened competition in IT and home appliances, including rivalry with Samsung Electronics Co. in smart home AI and extended reality (XR) devices.

LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics unveiled smart home AI products at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the United States, last month.

Samsung Electronics is developing XR headsets with Google LLC and Qualcomm Inc. LG Electronics plans to release XR headsets developed in partnership with Meta next year.
