Whiskey from non-major producers is emerging as a popular choice among South Korean consumers as imports of the Western alcoholic beverage hit record highs in 2023.

According to sources familiar with the beverage industry, sales of whiskey from Australia, India, and Spain, all of which are non-traditional manufacturing countries, increased in response to the expensive products from traditional powerhouses, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Ireland becoming scarce in Korea, where a growing number of consumers are enjoying highball cocktails.

The surge in demand for budget-friendly whiskey prompted BGF Retail Co. to explore affordable options beyond the traditional whiskey-producing regions.

Industry observers said on Thursday that BGF Retail, the operator of South Korean convenience store chain CU, is set to launch a renowned Australian whiskey as part of its private label (PB) lineup in March 2024. Focusing on catering to enthusiasts of highball cocktails, the company plans to launch a 1-liter product at an affordable price of 10,000 won ($7.47) per bottle.

“The aim is to introduce local consumers to high-quality whiskeys from various global sources,” an industry source who requested anonymity said. Australian whiskey imports, which amounted to a mere $4,000 in 2021, rapidly increased to $139,000 by 2023.
