South Korea’s second largest automaker Kia Motors Corp. has achieved 1 million sales milestone with its compact crossover SUV model Soul in the United States.

Kia Motors America (KMA) said on Tuesday (local time) it has sold over 1 million units of Soul in the U.S. in just nine years since it launched the model in the country. As the first production vehicle in Kia’s design-oriented transformation led by its chief design officer Peter Schreyer, Soul has helped the automaker gain ground in the U.S., according to KMA.

Kia Soul is famous for a series of advertising starring hamsters tapping their paws to a popular playlist that appealed to American people. Its YouTube video clip drew over 20 million views in 2011, and the hamster advertising won many local awards including the “Automotive Ad of the Year” by Nielsen Automotive Advertising Awards.

Last year, its 2018 Soul earned the highest rating of “2017 Top Safety Pick+” in a crash test conducted by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), winning ‘good’ ratings in all five crashworthiness tests and ‘superior’ in the front crash prevention test. It also ranked third in the top 25 new car for senior drivers list released by American magazine Consumer Reports after Japan’s Subaru Forester and Subaru Outback.
