South Korea’s shipbuilder Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co., sister company of the country’s biggest shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., will shut down its ship block building yard in Ulsan next month to return the land to the port city upon the expiration of land lease contract.

The shipbuilder has been assembling ship block at the yard in Jangsaengpo-dong, Ulsan for 13 years since 2005, but the company and the city government have agreed not to extend the land lease, which expires June, the company said.

Hyundai Mipo Dockyad will move its block assembly work to its headquarters and another factory in Ulsan, the company said. After the company demolishes the factory, the Ulsan city plans to build a waterfront park, which includes a large-sized observatory, and aquarium and maritime theme park, at the empty site.

Hyundai Mipo Dockyard reclaimed the land of 98,000 square meters in Jangsaengpo-dong as part of the Ulsan Port project in 1997 and signed a contract to use the reclaimed land to build its factory with related parties in 2004 - the land owner Ulsan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries (former Ulsan Regional Maritime Affairs and Port Office), Ulsan Metropolitan City, Namgu Ulsan Metropolitan City and Jangsaengpo-dong resident group.
