Korea’s Samsung SDI will provide about 13,000 battery modules for energy storage systems for a solar power project on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, the company said Monday.

The Lawai Solar and Energy Project co-led by Distributed Energy of U.S.-based AES Group calls for installations of a 28㎿ solar photovoltaic system and a 100㎿h ESS on Kauai.

The U.S. state aims to become 100 percent reliant on renewable energy by 2045.

The 100㎿h ESS, the largest such system in Hawaii, can power the entire 17,000 households on Kauai for more than 10 hours, according to the company.

In October 2017, Samsung SDI provided a 10㎿ ESS lithium-ion battery for a wind-power ESS in Hawaii. In February 2017, the Korean company participated in California’s power grid project together with global companies.

“America’s ESS market is well known for its rigorous standards. The participation in the latest project demonstrates the excellence of our technology and product,” said a Samsung SDI official. The U.S. ESS market is expected to grow sharply as the U.S. government wants to upgrade and replace old power grid systems with renewable energy resources.
