South Korea`s top shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) said Thursday that it has signed a deal with Swiss engine manufacturer Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD) to join forces in smart ship sector.
Hyundai Heavy said the deal calls for pairing the integrated smart ship (ISS) solution developed by HHI and its affiliate Hyundai Electric with the engine diagnostic system (EDS) and data collection and monitoring (DCM) platform developed by WinGD.
The combination will allow real-time monitoring of a ship`s engine and remote support services to a ship`s crew to enhance operational efficiency and safety through more standardized navigation routines, HHI said in a statement.
HHI said the partnership will also help it better respond to the e-Navigation initiative being pursued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The smart navigation system based on ICT technology and big data analytics is seen as a way to overcome the current challenges facing shipbuilding markets hit by a drop in new orders. HHI developed the world’s first smart navigation solution in 2011 and has equipped it with about 300 ships around the world.
