Samsung C&T Corp. named former General Electric (GE) executive Philippe Cochet to serve as its outside director, the first non-Korean national to sit on the board of the South Korean construction giant.

The company said Wednesday it appointed Philippe Cochet, who served as chief productivity officer at GE, as one of its new outside directors.

The move is in line with Samsung Group’s recent efforts to add global expertise to its board. Last week, Samsung Electronics Co. tapped Kim Jeong-hoon, a Korean-American tech entrepreneur who served as former head of Bell Labs, to join its board of directors.

French-born Philippe Cochet, 58, joined GE Medical Systems Europe in 1994 and went on to serve as vice-president of Europe operations and later senior vice-president of the X-ray division. In 2006, he served as senior vice-president at Alstom Hydro & Wind and went on to become president of Alstom Power Thermal in 2011. When GE acquired Alstom in 2015, he assumed the position of chief production officer, in which he worked with GE’s industrial businesses to establish and deliver the best practices in operations, manufacturing, services, cost competitiveness and customer focus.

Samsung C&T said it expects Cochet to offer insightful advice to the company’s core businesses and help improve transparency in corporate governance.
