South Korea’s shipbuilder Hyundai Mipo Dockyard has built the country’s first bulk carrier that can run on either bunker-C oil or liquefied natural gas fuel.

The 50,000-ton dual fuel engine carrier named Green Iris was delivered to local ship owner Ilshin Logistics, Hyundai Mipo Dockyard announced on Wednesday.

The vessel which measures 191m in length, 32.2m in width and 17.3m in height will deliver limestone along Korean coastal regions. The new bulk carrier features reduced emissions and operating efficiency.

Green Iris also marks the country’s first commercial vessel equipped with a fuel gas storage & supply system that feeds vaporized LNG to the ship’s main engine or generator.

Hyundai Mipo Dockyard has steadily yielded profit from the market for dual fuel engine ships as demand for green engines rise amid tougher gas emissions regulations around the world.

In 2016, the company announced its delivery of the world’s first methanol fuelled ocean-going vessels to Westfal-Larsen in Norway and Marinvest in Sweden.
