South Korea’s low-cost carriers (LCCs) served a record number of 20 million passengers on international flights last year on rising demand for cheap air travel among young, budget-conscious travelers.

According to the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation on Sunday, the number of outbound passengers carried by budget airlines surged 41.9 percent year over year to 20.3 million in full 2017.

The number of Koreans flying abroad also rose 18.4 percent to 26.5 million in the same period.

Popularity of LCCs is in line with the changing lifestyle of Koreans who increasingly opt to spend quality time overseas at bargain prices.

Jeju Air logged the highest number of passengers at 5.83 million, followed by Jin Air at 4.86 million and T’way Airlines at 3.29 million. Air Busan tallied 3 million, Eastar Jet 2.51 million, and the newly launched Air Seoul 0.82 million.

Their gains came at the expense of the country’s two full-service carriers. Data showed that the combined passenger volume of Korean Air Lines Co. and Asiana Airlines Inc. slipped 1.9 percent on year to 32.3 million in 2017.

The number of passengers served by the country’s largest flag carrier Korean Air stood at 18.9 million passengers last year, down 0.6 percent, while that of Asiana slumped 3.8 percent to 13.3 million.
