Hancom Group, owner of South Korea’s leading office software developer Hancom Inc. that is striving to diversify its business portfolio through convergence of software and hardware platforms, will present its smart city solutions at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC).

The company said on Thursday that it will display its smart city solutions that have been developed based on its indigenous artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), block chain, and security technologies at the world’s biggest mobile industry trade show to be held in Barcelona, Spain next week.

The software developer will display the smart city platform in three main areas - an IoT-based platform that helps control vehicles, drones, closed-circuit televisions and sensor-embedded smart buildings using cloud computing technology; a platform dedicated to enhancing public safety and convenience such as in fire prevention, telecommunications, and crime prevention sectors; and an administrative platform that can promote an electronic government, smart contracts and smart financial services using block chain technology.

The company explained that Hancom MDS Inc. has developed the IoT device management solution; Hancom Inc. artificial intelligence and voice recognition technologies; Hancom Secure Co. block chain and security technologies; and SanCheong Co. fire-sensing and disaster response technologies. Hancom Group owns 14 business arms that develop both hardware and software solutions.

Hancom Group will also display its smart city platform exclusively developed for Seoul city. The company jointly set up a special council with Seoul city government last year to promote exports of a local smart city platform to other countries. The Seoul government has created a digitalized room for citizens where they can search public data and has applied a smart city platform to Seoul Transport Operation & Information Service, CCTV integrated control center, 120 Dasan Call Center, and tap water Arisu system.

An unnamed official from Hancom Group said the company hopes its participation in the MWC can help it enhance its brand awareness and technology capacity in the smart city platform sector that has been growing rapidly.

Separately Hancom Inc. announced in a regulatory filing Thursday that its operating income increased 11.5 percent to a record 32.2 billion won (29.8 million) in 2017 from a year ago. Sales also jumped 32.4 percent to reach an all-time high of 134.1 billion won on a consolidated basis over the same period.
