South Korea’s top mobile carrier SK Telecom Co. said on Tuesday it will enter into a strategic partnership agreement with Nokia at MWC 2018 to be held in Barcelona, Spain to provide its 5G-PON (5G-Passive Optical Network) solution, one of key technologies for the 5G communication.

5G-PON is an intelligent hybrid fronthaul solution that can carry mobile traffic from the base station baseband processing units (BBUs) to the remote radio heads on the tower. It delivers multiple communications services using a single network unlike the conventional distribution networks, where different networks are required for 3G, LTE and broadband access.

In the era of 5G communication, base stations need to be densely deployed with an amount of data on the network growing larger, raising the importance of fronthaul technology, said an SK Telecom official.

The company said that data transmission quality will be improved especially in remote and mountainous areas as the solution can work without additional power supply and features easy outdoor installations.

SK Telecom launched a project to develop 5G-PON in cooperation with Korean partners in 2015. The solution has been deployed to the carrier’s network since last November. SK Telecom plans to leverage the exhibition to expand the application of its new network solution outside Korea.
