Maeil Dairies Co., South Korea’s leading dairy and beverage producer, has opened a sarcopenia research and development center, adding a senior dietary product business amid rapid growth in the aged population in the country.
Sarcopenia is the gradual loss of muscle that occurs as a part of the aging process. It can affect mobility, particularity in the elderly. There is no absolute treatment except for proper nutrition and regular exercise to prevent the age-related muscle loss, according to the company.
Maeil Dairies mainly focuses on producing food and dietary products for babies and young children but has decided to expand its food business to all stages of life, especially in the old age group to better meet the needs of the society with rapidly aging population, said the company on Tuesday.
The sarcopenia R&D center will lead various projects including studying sarcopenia-related disorders and developing nutritional food products, said the company.
Foods high in leucine, an essential amino acid used in the liver, fat tissue, and muscle tissue, is recommend to prevent sarcopenia. It is known that sarcopenia cannot be produced by human body but can only be supplied from dietary sources such as cheese.
