Samsung Electronics starts mass production of upgraded 256GB flash storage for vehicles

Samsung Electronics said in a statement on Thursday that it started producing the 256GB eUFC for use in next-generation automotive applications. The new flash storage is an upgraded version of the world’s first automotive memory 128GB embedded memory that was first mass produced by Samsung Electronics in September.
Samsung Electronics expects the latest solution would further widen a technology gap with its peers in the development of automotive chips and help it solidify its leading position in the premium auto application memory market.
The new eUFS solution is designed for use in next-generation, advanced driver-assistance systems, as well as infotainment and dashboard systems that provide connected features to premium cars such as luxury sedans and sports vehicles. The solution has been developed using non-volatile storage (NAND) flash memory, like the conventional embedded multimedia card (eMMC) solutions for wide use in smartphones. The eUFS solution, however, offers performance at faster processing speeds, the company said.
In particular, the new solution’s data refresh feature “speeds up processing and enables greater system reliability by relocation older data to other less-used cells,” according to the company’s statement.
In addition to solutions for high-specification, luxury vehicles, Samsung Electronics plans to expand its portfolio across the entire automotive market to accelerate growth in the premium memory market.
