South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc. has opened a state-accredited water science research lab in its research and development center in Changwon, its home appliances manufacturing base in South Gyeongsang Province, Korea, the company said Thursday.

Its water science research lab received national accreditation from the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme, certifying that it is fully capable of conducting water quality examinations based on global standards, said the company.

At the new science lab, its engineers in cooperation with scientists from the country’s acclaimed academic institutions including Yonsei University and Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology will study and develop next-generation water filtration technology and other technologies to improve drinking water quality level.

The company expects the water science research lab to help it solidify its position in the country’s water purifier market. LG Electronics, which makes a variety of electronics ranging from smartphones to home appliance such as TVs and air conditioners, entered the local water purifier market in 2009. It is selling water purifiers as well as air cleaners and humidifiers under ‘PuriCare’ brand.
