Asiana Airlines Inc., South Korea’s second largest full-service carrier that is being chased closely by budget carriers, plans to phase out of short-distance or Asian destinations to make most of its flights go beyond the continent in the long run.

“We must ready for the next 30 years with next-generation fleet and long-distance routes,” said Kim Soo-cheon, president and CEO of Asiana Airlines, in an event commemorating the airliner’s 30th anniversary on Tuesday.

Starting with two A350 additions this year, the company will secure 32 jumbo jets and expand long-distance routes to 19 by 2022.

“In the long-term, long-distance destinations will make up more than 60 percent of our flights”, he said.

Asiana adds Venice in May and Barcelona in August on its regular schedule. To raise profitability in the short-distance operation, the airliner will replace carriers with fuel-efficient model A321-NEO jets.
