Air Pohang

South Korea’s budget carrier Air Pohang Co. has launched its official service on Wednesday, joining the country’s low cost carrier market already crowded with six competitors.

According to the country’s seventh LLC operator, its first-ever flight departed from Gimpo airport in Seoul at 6:50 a.m. Wednesday towards the southeastern city of Pohang. The carrier plans to run round-trip flights on Pohang-Gimpo route and Pohang-Jeju route twice a day, respectively. Jeju island is Korea’s most famous resort island off the south coast of the country.

For the launch, Air Pohang purchased two aircrafts of CRJ-200 in July 2017. The aircraft with 50 seats is 26.7 meters long and 6.2 meters high, and almost 60 airlines are currently operating about 1,000 aircrafts of CRJ-200 on various routes in the world.

Founded by Dong-Hwa Electronics with initial investment of 10 billion won ($9.2 million), Air Pohang is expected to secure additional 2 billion won fund from each North Gyeongsang Province and Pohang City governments.

The Pohang-based LLC plans to add another 50-seat aircraft in the second half of this year to service between Pohang and Incheon, as well as Pohang and Yeosu. Pohang-Ulleung route will be another option once an airport is built in Ulleung island, about 80 miles east of the Korean peninsula, in 2022.
