SK Telecom said on Tuesday it has teamed up with Namyang Dairy Products and biotech start-up uLikeKorea to introduce Live Care, an IoT-based livestock management system, starting with Namyang farms across the country.

Live Care, the first approved orally-administered medical equipment for animals in Korea, enables the insertion of a bio-capsule equipped with IoT communication functions into the cow’s first stomach to monitor the animal’s body temperature in real time. Temperature data is analyzed to detect disease signs, predict the optimal timing for fertilization and identify delivery signs. Abnormal temperature changes will be sent to farmers’ smartphone or PC through an IoT base station.

Namyang Dairy Products will use Live Care to manage 700 milk cows at its six farms across the country to identify signs of disease, bovine estrous and pregnancy with accuracy. Unlike existing devices attached to the body, Live Care is not affected by possible damage or external temperature changes.

The three companies aim to contribute to producing high quality milk by adding big data and artificial intelligence to the farmer’s empirical data.

Namyang Dairy Products plans to launch a new premium brand product for milk to be produced under Live Care in the first half of this year.

SK Telecom and uLikeKorea plan to build an integrated bio-capsule monitoring system to expand their service to include traceability management.
