Samsung Electronics Friday announced it has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Southeast Asia`s largest car-hailing firm Grab.
The Southeast Asian version of Uber offers car-sharing in 186 cities in eight countries including Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. Its app is installed in over 77 million mobile devices and has 2.3 million registered drivers.
The agreement represents Samsung’s first partnership with a car-hailing service firm and is significant in that Samsung gets access to a massive user base in Southeast Asia.
Under the contract, Samsung will offer a financing program for registered Grab drivers to allow them to purchase the company`s latest smartphones easier.
Grab will have greater access to company-specific devices as Grab will be offered as a pre-installed app on Samsung’s smartphones. Grab will also apply Samsung products to offline kiosks and booths at key airports, hotels and shopping malls.
Samsung Electronics will supply its car infotainment system to Grab`s taxis, starting with those in Singapore. Samsung’s smartphones and tablets to be supplied as infotainment systems will be equipped with the company’s enterprise security solution Knox. Taxi users will be able to enjoy various content such as hot places, fun videos and customized ads.
