Hana and Mode Tour book highest number of overseas travelers in Jan

The nation’s largest travel agency Hana Tour Service Inc. said Thursday that the number of travelers going abroad through the agency rose 21.8 percent from a year earlier to around 417,000 in January, marking the highest monthly figure. About 40.4 percent of them chose to visit Japan last month, 38.7 percent to the South East Asian countries and 10.6 percent to China.
Outbound travelers to the South East Asian countries grew 29.6 percent from the same month a year ago, followed by Europe 28.3 percent and the Americas 26 percent.
The country’s second biggest tour company Mode Tour Co. said it booked about 220,000 overseas travelers last month, up 15.9 percent from a year earlier. It said the monthly figure exceeded 200,000 for the first time.
The number of people who just bought flight tickets through the agency reached 127,000, up 22.4 percent.
Travelers to Europe and South East Asia rose 50 percent and 30.6 percent, respectively, over the same period.
The number of Korean visitors to China that had declined by double digits since April last year dropped 8.3 percent on year in January.
