South Korea’s Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co. affiliated with the country’s largest shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. has clinched a $200 million deal to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier with Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) Line, according to multiple industry sources on Thursday.

This is the Korean shipbuilder’s seventh order it has obtained so far this year and marks the first high-value added vessel contract in the global shipbuilding industry this year.

Sources said on Thursday Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries has recently won a $200 million order to build a 174,000 cubic meter LNG vessel from NYK Line. The carrier will be delivered to the Japanese shipping company in 2020 and then will be chartered to Electricite de France (EDF), a state-owned electricity group of France, for 20 years under a long-term contract with NYK Line.

As Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries won the world’s first LNG order for this year, the Korean shipbuilder is off to a good start in 2018, industry observers said. It has also rivaled out other Japanese shipbuilders, which is unusual given that Japanese shipping companies tend to assign vessel orders to its own builders.

It is the second time for Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries to win an LNG order from a Japanese shipping company and the first in 13 years. The first order was clinched in 2005 from Japanese carrier Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) to build a 177,000 cubic meter LNG vessel.

So far this year, Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries has won seven orders including the latest LNG deal and others to build very large crude carriers and very large ore carriers.

All combined Hyundai Heavy Industries Group has won orders worth $1 billion for 15 vessels this year.
