South Korea’s Posco Engineering & Construction Co. (Posco E&C) broke ground for a coal-fired thermal power plant on Matarbari Island in Bangladesh, which is part of the single largest project of its kind in South Asia led by a Japanese consortium.

Posco E&C announced on Monday that it embarked on the construction of a coal-fired thermal power plant and related facilities on the island in Chittagong, located 280 kilometers southeast of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. The project involves building the coal-fired power plant that can generate 1,200 megawatts (MW) power and related facilities over a period of seven years. The Korean company will spend 950 billion won ($893 million) on civil engineering of the plant and construction of raw material treatment facilities, a project that is part of the $4.5 billion-invested coal-fire thermal power development project led by a Japanese consortium. This is the largest coal-fired power plant project in South Asia, the company said.

The Matarbari coal-fired power plant project has been promoted by the Bangladesh government in cooperation with the Japanese government to improve low electricity supply in the region. The state-run Coal Power Generation Company sealed a deal with Japan’s Sumitomo Corp.-led consortium for the project, which assigned Posco E&C for the plant construction work in August.
