LG Uplus has unveiled the industry’s first LTE-enabled aquatic drone in Korea.

The company said on Thursday that it launched LTE Drone Total Service to provide customized LTE drones, cloud control and comprehensive insurance coverage, and demonstrated its smart drone management service in Haeundae, Busan.

The aquatic drone in the demonstration is equipped with functions to transmit LTE-based image signals, fly autonomously and enable remote control over a cloud control system. It can fly up to six hours on the sea water with 2 meter high waves. The drone’s environment sensor can detect changes in the marine environment beforehand to respond proactively, according to the company.

The aquatic drone took off from Haeundae Beach and flew about 1 kilometer on an autopilot mode. It collected data on water temperature and dissolved oxygen and sent them to the control system over the LTE network.

"The company plans to apply LTE-enabled aquatic drones to the public sector first and then expand its applications to fishing industries and other private sectors,” said an LG Uplus official.

LG Uplus also aims to provide a drone training program in connection with a drone insurance policy during the first half of this year. The company is in talks with a local insurer to launch comprehensive insurance that covers the damage caused to persons and properties including its drones.

The aquatic drone and other customized LTE-enabled drones were designed as part of the company’s U+ Smart Drone Total Service Package, LG Uplus said.
