Hyundai Merchant Marine Co. (HMM) is now offering ultra-freezer services for food shipments, becoming the third shipping line in the world with such capabilities after Maersk and CMA CGM.

South Korea’s largest ocean carrier said on Thursday it launched its first ultra-freezer service starting with a route from Busan, Korea to Barcelona, Spain.

Ultra-freezer service refers to transportation of goods at -60 degrees Celsius (-76 degrees Fahrenheit), beyond the limit of regular reefers at -35C to -40C.

Freight rates are four to eight times higher than standard reefer services as it requires sophisticated technology and highly-skilled personnel to maintain an extremely low temperature during shifting, loading and discharging, according to the company.

This new capability also allows ocean carriers to carry more profitable goods that are normally transported by air, such as raw tuna and sea urchin.

HMM said it plans to gradually expand the service scope to other routes including Busan (Korea) - Shimizu (Japan) and Algeciras (Spain) - Yokohama (Japan).

“We expect to build on this new reefer container service to boost profits and add more value-added offerings,” said a HMM official.
