LS Industrial Systems Co. (LSIS), a South Korean manufacturer of electric power and automation equipment, announced on Wednesday it has independently developed a modular energy storage system (ESS) that can easily scale up or down the power conversion capacity.

The new power conversion system (PCS) for mid-to-large ESS applications, dubbed LSIS Modular Scalable PCS, is due to be released in Korea and other markets this month.

PCS converts electricity from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC), or vice versa in the ESS.

The company said PEBBs, core components of PCS, are modularized with 125 to 158㎾ capacity and individual PEBBs with a smart independent drive function. Up to 16 PEBBs, the industry’s highest level in Korea, can be connected in parallel. Users can combine multiple PCSs to meet their capacity needs.

The independent drive function along with the company’s ESS operating system allows partial operation against a breakdown in some PEBBs, leading to a minimized system disruption, the company said.

The worldwide ESS market is expected to grow sharply from about 3 trillion won ($2.8 billion) in 2016 to 16 trillion won in 2020 and 32 trillion won in 2025, according to government data.

Shares of Kospi-listed LSIS closed up 0.63 percent at 80,300 won on Wednesday.
