Korean business leaders to flock to 2018 WEF in Davos

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won and other leaders of South Korea’s top conglomerates will attend the World Economic Forum (WEF)’s 48th Annual Meeting in Davos which will take place on January 23-26.

Chey has attended the meeting every year since 1998, except for last year, when bribery allegations related to power abuse scandal that brought down then president Park Geun-hye ruled Chey out of overseas trip.

Chey will be accompanied by SK Telecom CEO Park Jung-ho and SK E&S CEO Yoo Jeong-joon to meet with global political and business figures, according to sources on Sunday.

Kim Dong-kwan, the eldest son of Hanwha Group chairman Kim Seung-yeon and executive director of Hanwha Q Cell will also be participating in the meeting. His attendance, the ninth year in a row will focus on the group’s solar energy business and future plans, according to sources. Hanwha Total CEO Kim Hee-chul and Hanwha Corp.’s head of machinery sector Kim Yeon-chul will also join the forum.

Also in attendance will be Hwang Chang-gyu, chairman of Korea’s mobile carrier KT, and Kim Young-hoon, Daesung Group chairman. Maekyung Media Group CEO Chang Dae-whan who attends the meeting every year will also be present. Last year, Chang agreed to produce a policy recommendation report for South Korea with Germany’s consultancy Roland Berger at the meeting and the report was made public at the end of March.

Hyundai Motor Group is expected to send vice chairman Yang Woong-chul to the forum instead of Chung Eui-sun who was present last year. Yang will explore and discuss global trends and emerging issues related to autonomous driving, green cars and future mobility technology during the meeting, according to sources.
