Robot cleaner is the new fad in Korean homes amid increasing single households and pet companions.

According to the electronics industry on Monday, over 250,000 robotic cleaners were sold in Korea last year, up 102 percent from 2016. Its share in the vacuuming market shot up to 12 percent last year from 7 percent in the previous year.

During the same period, sales of cordless cleaners gained 33 percent while those of typical vacuum fell 4 percent.

Costly machines from top household names - Samsung Electronics’ POWERbot and LG Electronics’ RoboKing - with a price tag of above 1 million won ($938.53) led the market.

The Korean sales unit of Swedish multinational home appliance manufacturer Electrolux joined the market in September last year.

Smaller players are also making fast strides. German maker Miele has strengthened partnership with Yujin Robot, putting in extra 40 million euros ($49 million) in its Korean partner last year. Yujin Robot sells cleaning robot dubbed iClebo in Korea. Braava 380T of U.S. consumer robot company iRobot also has been selling well on online platforms.
