South Korean molecular diagnostics company Seegene Inc. announced on Wednesday it has successfully developed a reagent to detect meningitis and sexually-transmitted diseases with the help of an artificial intelligence (AI) system that significantly cut time for development.

The new reagent enables simultaneously detect eight different genes associated with those diseases, and an AI system was used with its self-developed algorithm for big data analysis on target pathogens, according to the company.

The combination of a computer algorithm and virtual experiments contributed to a dramatic reduction in research time required for reagent development.

The development took only four days on the AI platform versus more than one year under the existing research and development process that relies on human labor, the company said.

This dramatic reduction in development time can lead to producing cheaper diagnosis kits, a major breakthrough to increase market penetration of molecular diagnosis, the company said.

Kosdaq-listed Seegene shares ended Wednesday 35,550 won ($33.36), up 5.8 percent from the previous session.
