Hyundai Motor Group announced on Thursday it will commercialize the industry’s top-level autonomous vehicle technology by 2021 in partnership with Silicon Valley start-up Aurora.

The South Korean top automaker said it will reveal its partnership project and development roadmaps at the CES technology conference in Las Vegas next week.

Aurora was founded in 2016 by Chris Urmson, who was instrumental in building Google`s self-driving car project, Sterling Anderson, who formerly worked at Tesla, and robotics expert Drew Bagnell at Uber.

The start-up is well known for its sophisticated self-driving technology marked by software, sensor and control systems, and back-end solutions that exchange data with a cloud system.

Under the alliance, Hyundai and Aurora aim to realize and sell level 4 autonomous vehicles, which can operate without human intervention under select conditions, in unidentified “pilot smart cities” by 2021.

Level 4 autonomy means near fully-autonomous operation in a selected environment, where the car can handle everything from accelerating to braking and steering by itself.

A smart city is home to Internet of Things technology with V2X (Vehicle to Everything) systems installed on all roads to ensure seamless data communication between car and infrastructure.
