Demand in very large and ultra-high definition premium TVs remains strong against overall stagnation in the TV market growth, largely benefiting the industry leader Samsung Electronics, data showed.

According to market research firm IHS Markit on Tuesday, sales of TV sets with screens of 75 inches or larger reached 1,151,000 units last year, and are expected to grow to about 1.7 million units this year, 2.2 million units next year and nearly 3.4 million units in 2020. In the first quarter of last year, sales stopped at 172,000 units but grew sharply to 290,000 units in the third quarter.

Samsung Electronics led the pack in the super-large premium TV segment, selling 151,800 units in the third quarter of last year. It was followed by Sony (79,700 units), LG Electronics (34,900 units) and Hisense (7,100 units).

Samsung outperformed Sony in the second quarter and further widened gap over the Japanese rival in the following months.

By display panel, sales of LCD TVs hit 289,300 units in the world in the third quarter whereas sales of OLED TVs were a mere 1,500 units. The global TV market is in a slump as smartphones replace TVs for home entertainment. Demand for high-definition premium TVs, however, remains strong, according to Samsung Electronics.

In the market of premium TVs worth over $1,500 per unit, Samsung Electronics took a lion’s share with 53.9 percent in the third quarter, overwhelming Sony’s 25.5 percent and LG Electronics’ 16.5 percent.
