Renault Samsung Motors Co., the South Korean unit of French carmaker Renault S.A., said it outperformed its annual sales target of over 270,000 last year thanks to increased overseas demand.

The company said it sold a total of 276,808 units - 100,537 units at home and 176,271 units abroad - in 2017, up 7.6 percent from a year ago.

Its performance on the home turf fell short of expectations. Domestic sales fell 9.5 percent from a year ago due to economic slowdown. Sales of its flagship model SM6 plunged 31.5 percent to 39,389 units from 2016. Newly launched gasoline-powered QM6 and SM5 reported year-on-year gains of 97.1 percent and 13.8 percent, respectively selling 27,837 units and 7,247 units in Korea.

Its overseas sales jumped 20.5 percent on year, breaking the previous record high of 149,066 units set in 2015. Outbound shipment in SM6 increased by more than eight times to 9,038 units, and QM6 more than seven times to 43,755 units from a year earlier.

“We’ve made significant progress in sales not just in our flagship models but across our lineup. The company plans to meet customers’ expectations with innovative new models and quality and after-sale service control,” said an official at the automaker.
