LG Display Co., South Korea’s top display manufacturer, said Monday that it developed the world’s first 8K, 88-inch organic light emitting diodes (OLED) display.

Its latest display offers a 7680×4320 resolution, 16 times higher compared to full HD (1920×1080) and four times more than UHD (3840×2160), the company claimed.

Development of the 8K OLED display proves that there is no technological limit for OLED to support high resolutions as rivaling liquid crystal displays, the company said.

OLEDs are self-emissive and do not require backlighting like LCDs, meaning that the company can keep the display slim and costs down. Also, the new OLED display controls 33 million pixels individually, thus maximizing the resolution, stressed the company.

LG Display plans to showcase its latest innovations including the 8K OLED display at CES 2018, the world’s largest tradeshow for consumer electronics and consumer technology to be held in Las Vegas, the U.S. between Jan. 9-12.
