KT Corp., South Korea’s leading carrier, announced on Wednesday it has launched the world’s first commercial 5G wifi service that can deliver speeds of up to 4.8 Gbps, nearly three times faster than the existing 1.7 Gbps service.
With the next-generation wifi service commercialized initially in downtown Seoul, more stable wireless wifi service becomes available even in high density environments, according to the company.
KT’s new access point (AP) solution uses 8x8 MIMO technology on the IEEE 802.11ax standard to up bandwidth efficiency.
KT signed an exclusive deal to team up with Qualcomm in June to develop a commercial wireless AP solution with increased Wi-Fi connectivity in high footfall usage areas such as stadiums ahead of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
