Sales of imported gas-electric hybrid cars - mostly Japanese brands - topped 20,000 units this year amid growing interest in eco-friendly vehicles.

According to Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association (KAIDA) on Monday, a total of 20,644 foreign hybrid cars were sold in Korea in January-November 2017, up 46.4 percent from the same period a year ago.

Sales of foreign hybrid cars that numbed just 56 units in the first year of 2006 jumped to 1,000 units in 2009, 6,000 units in 2012, and 16,259 units last year.

By brand, Lexus, luxury sedan label of Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp. sold a total of 10,525 hybrid sedans during January-November this year and accounted for the lion’s share of 51.0 percent. Toyota Motor Corp sold 6,663 hybrid cars, taking up 32.2 percent of the total market, and Honda Motor Co. sold 2,099 units, claiming a 10.2 percent share.
