SK Siltron, the semiconductor wafer unit of South Korea’s SK Group, will invest 400 billion won ($372 million) to increase capacity to meet the growing demands from chipmakers, including its sister company SK Hynix.

Such demands have been rapidly gaining ground with broader applications in self-driving cars and artificial intelligence. The investment plan to be implemented by February 2019 was made public on Tuesday in Gyeongbuk Province where the company’s Gumi plant is located.

Market analysts say wafer prices will continue to rise next year amid global supply shortage. SK Siltron, the world’s fourth largest wafer producer in terms of 300㎜ wafer processing, anticipates the output boost will bring in revenue of more than 1 trillion won in total.

SK Siltron, the only semiconductor wafer maker in Korea, was acquired by SK Group from LG Group in August to seek vertical integration in chip manufacturing with SK Hynix, the world’s second largest memory chipmaker.
