Korea’s first LNG-fueled bulk carrier goes in service next year

The carrier named Green Iris was built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard. It has the world’s largest capacity of 50,000 tons. It will deliver limestone from Donghae in Gangwon Province to Gwangyang in South Jeolla Province for the country’s leading steelmaker Posco. It will be fueled with LNG from a tanker of Korea Gas Corp. at Donghae Port. LNG is dubbed to be one of the most cost-effective and environmentally-friendly options for marine fuel.
The vessel is also the world’s first ship carrying a fuel tank made of high manganese steel that Posco developed after 10 years of research. The high manganese steel is capable of carrying and storing LNG at ultra-low temperature of 196 degrees Celsius below zero.
An official from the government said that LNG would become the main fuel option for vessels in the future, and the government will strongly support in expanding LNG supply system and developing new materials like high manganese.
