South Korea’s SK Telecom announced on Friday it has achieved an important technology milestone in data communication based on the newly-approved NSA (Non-Standalone) 5G NR standard it pursues with leading mobile communications companies Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies.

The companies showcased 3GPP-compliant 5G NR multi-vendor interoperability during live demonstrations held in Ericsson’s headquarters in Sweden, paving the way for commercial launches of 5G standard-compliant infrastructure and devices.

The 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) founded in 1998 is an international collaboration of telecommunications bodies in the standardization of public mobile communication systems.

The 3GPP approved key NSA-based 5G standards during its general meeting held in Portugal on Wednesday.

SK Telecom, Ericsson and Qualcomm demonstrated some features of the 5G communication such as very high speed data transmission and a very low delay within 0.001 second using their jointly developed 5G-compliant base station and terminal prototypes.

The three telecom giants are on track to accelerate the commercial use of the 5G network.
