South Korea’s Samsung Display Co. remains unrivaled in the small organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panel market, supplying 96.5 percent of flexible screens whose demand overwhelms flat OLED to host curved phones and wearables.

According to the global IT market data provider IHS Markit on Monday, Samsung Display sold $2.94 billion worth flexible OLED displays whose combined global sales reached a historic high of $3.05 billion in the third quarter.

LG Display which turned aggressive on the smaller OLED panel market supplied $100 million worth or 3.3 percent of the global share. China’s EverDisplay Optronics recorded sales of $3.7 million for a share of 0.1 percent.

Flexible OLEDs are highly lucrative as they triple the cost of flat LEDs and are more than six times expensive than liquid crystal displays.

Demand for flexible panels surged as the premium phones of Apple and others all opted to come in curved display.

They sold $1.11 billion in the first quarter, less than half of flat OLEDs worth $2.6 billion. In the second quarter it overwhelmed flat rivals by adding $1 billion every quarter.
