South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co. will run its hydrogen-fueled autonomous vehicles during the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics due in February.

The country’s largest automaker said Wednesday that it will test run five hydrogen-fueled electric cars equipped with level 4 autonomous driving technology by the standard of the U.S. Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and two Genesis G80 vehicles on a 200-kilometer-long highway from Seoul to Pyeongchang right before the opening of the Olympics.

The company’s five self-driving electric vehicles powered by hydrogen will run around the Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium during the Olympics. The carmaker is in partnership with the nation’s mobile carrier KT Corp. to provide cutting-edge connected car technology based on fifth-generation (5G) network that enables users to control the lights at home, check physical conditions and get video consultation with a doctor and have artificial intelligence (AI)-based chatting inside the car.

Hyundai Motor also plans to operate four hydrogen-powered electric shuttle buses from Gangneung station to Olympic Park, and one for VIP guests from Yangyang International Airport to Pyeongchang and Gangneung.

An official from Hyundai Motor said that the upcoming Winter Olympic Games will be a good opportunity to showcase and promote its advanced eco-friendly car technology to visitors from around the world.
