South Korea’s second largest memory chipmaker SK Hynix Inc. is seeking to establish a foundry in China in a joint venture with a Chinese company, a source told the Maeil Business Newspaper.

The company’s board of directors will give a go-ahead to the plan on Wednesday, according to the source. The chipmaker is yet to disclose a statement on the matter.

At 2:40 p.m. Wednesday, shares of SK Hynix were up 0.8 percent at 80,800 won ($74.70).

Under its plan, the company will build a foundry within its dynamic random memory access (DRAM) complex in Wuxi, China, currently under expansion to double its chip-making capacity. The joint venture will be on a 50:50 basis. Construction will begin in the first quarter of 2019 to be ready for operation by early 2020, the source said, declining to specify the Chinese partner and investment figure.

In July, SK Hynix spun off its foundry business to SK Hynix System IC to build up competitiveness as a foundry powerhouse.

A foundry receives orders from fabless companies and manufactures chips on given designs. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) is the dominant market leader with a 50.6 percent share. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, despite being the world’s largest DRAM players, remain weak in the consigned market with their shares last year standing at 7.9 percent and 0.2 percent, respectively.

According to market research firm IHS Markit, the global foundry market is projected to grow at an annual average rate of 8 percent over the next three years.

Separately, SK Hynix said on Tuesday it will inject $250 million from 2018 to 2021 in SK Hynix Semiconductor, its fully-owned Chinese entity, to expand its final-stage semiconductor line in Chongqing.
