BGF Retail Co., operator of South Korea’s largest convenience store chain CU, has set up electric vehicle chargers for U.S. Tesla Motors Inc. cars at CU stores and plans to install more EV charging stations at other outlets across the country.

BGF Retail said Monday that it has installed seven ‘Tesla Destination Chargers’ at four of its CU branches - Gapyeong Sancheon, Cheongpyeong Daein, Uiwang Ohjeon, Bibong Premium - nearby Seoul. All four branches are located near scenic roads, about one hour drive away from the country’s capital and close to freeway exit. They also have spacious parking lots, making them suitable to set up EV charging pods, the company said.

Tesla Korea, the local unit of the American EV maker has fixed up the EV chargers and related equipment. Any Tesla drivers can use the Tesla Destination Chargers located at the four CU branches to charge their electric cars free of charge. BGF Retail will provide EV charging services to customers as well as manage the facilities.

The Korean convenience store chain operator plans to add more Tesla Destination Chargers at other locations across the country, starting with metropolitan Seoul, after monitoring the EV charger usage.

Convenience store that is accessible throughout day and night, as well as all year round is evolving to become a lifestyle platform, said a BGF Retail Officer. Following the installation of the EV charging pods at CU branches, the company will reinforce its pledge to provide better social infrastructure, said the official.
