South Korea’s wireless carrier LG Uplus Corp. has combined its home Internet of Things (IoT) service with the nation’s leading online portal operator Naver Corp.’s artificial intelligence (AI) platform to cement its position in the country’s smart home service market.
LG Uplus on Monday unveiled its new smart home service ‘U+ My Home AI’ that connects its IPTV and home IoT services to Naver’s AI platform Clova.
The new smart home service is supported by the AI speaker Friends+ that enables users to control IPTV service and home appliances on voice command. The speaker is able to show a list of movies and video-on-demand (VOD) when a user just says some keywords. For instance, if a user says “please search for tear-jerking movies,” the service would immediately pull up a list of sad movies along with their main story and reviews.
An official from LG Uplus said that the company aims to expand its presence in the home media market by joining hands with Naver that is strong in AI technology. The number of subscribers of LG Uplus’ home IoT service has already exceeded 1 million for the first time among Korean home IoT service providers, and its IPTV service also boasts the largest number of users in the country. For Naver, the partnership would serve as an opportunity to expand its AI platform business from online to offline.
Shares of LG Uplus closed Monday at 14,450 won, down 1.03 percent, while those of Naver rose 1.78 percent to 859,000 won from the previous session.
