South Korea’s leading broadband and mobile carrier KT Corp. has won a 9 million euro deal from the Gabonese government to build a high-speed communication network that runs 528km across the African country, the company announced on Sunday.

The project led by ANINF, Gabon’s radio frequency management authorities, is backed by the World Bank and aims to build the communication network and seven regional operating centers in Gabon with a goal of completion set for 2018.

The project spans the area from Lambaréné in the southern province of Gabon to the northern border areas adjacent to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. Upon completion, mobile services on a high-speed network will be available across Gabon and in neighboring countries. Access to high-speed internet at home and offices will improve to 62.5 percent in Gabon, according to KT.

Mobile telephone subscriptions in Gabon are relatively high, but its fixed line infrastructure has aged, limiting the access to the internet.

KT is the first Korean telecom carrier that has won an overseas project backed by the World Bank, the company said.

At 1:40 pm on Monday, KT shares lost 0.48 percent to trade at 31,150 won ($28.6) on the Kospi.
