China has come under growing criticism from foreign media for its violent overreaction to Korean press corps covering the South Korean president’s first state visit to China.

CNN reported that the Korean journalists were “beaten bloody,” showing a video footage of Chinese security guards pushing a reporter to the ground and kicking and beating him.

The clash occurred at a trade show in Beijing on Thursday when the Korean press complained of the excessive security despite their press pass. In the process, around 15 Chinese guards attacked a photographer from Hankook Ilbo who had fallen to the ground and injured another photojournalist from Maeil Business Newspaper.

The New York Times, Washington Post and Financial Times reported that the summit, intended to improve relations after a year-long diplomatic row, was “marred” by the scuffle.

Korea’s presidential press corps released a joint statement, demanding thorough investigation and punishment of the assailants as well as a pledge from Beijing to prevent similar actions in the future.

The International Federation of Journalists said it “stands in solidarity with our Korean colleagues in demanding an apology from the Chinese authorities,” adding “the situation for journalists, both local and foreign, in China continues to deteriorate and is raising serious concerns about the safety and security of the media.”
