South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co. said on Wednesday that its new imaging engine technology with a low radiation dose gained approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

According to the Korean tech giant, it has applied its new imaging engine technology S-Vue to its premium digital X-ray GC85A released in 2015 and found out that the imaging engine technology allows the digital X-ray device to produce a chest image of the equal quality with the one of the conventional X-ray technology but with half the level of radiation.

Without S-Vue, a single shot of digital chest X-ray had a patient exposed to an average 16 microsievert (μ㏜) dose of radiation. But with its application, radiation exposure was reduced by half to 8 μ㏜, the company claimed. A single μ㏜ is equal to the level of radiation exposure when having about 80 bananas as they contain naturally occurring radioactive isotopes. It is also equal to the level that is absorbed to the body when flying on a three-hour flight from New York to Chicago. Nuclear safety regulation stipulates that an individual should be limited to 1 millisievert (m㏜) or 1,000 μ㏜ doses of radiation per year.

Based on the latest study result, the S-Vue technology obtained FDA approval for chest X-rays. An unnamed official from Samsung Electronics said that the company will strive to develop imaging engine technology that also can be applied to X-ray for other body parts such as abdomen, arms and legs as well as X-ray suitable for children.

Before the FDA approval, Samsung Electronics presented its low radiation dose imaging engine technology at the Radiological Society of North America in November in Chicago and received good reviews, the company said.
