LG Electronics Co. has developed an LTE-based V2X (vehicle to everything) system and V2X-mediated safety driving technology that it believes can deliver a new level of capability for autonomous driving and car connectivity, the company said on Sunday.

Under the LTE V2X, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-person (V2P) communications are enabled at high speeds on long-term evolution (LTE) networks, it said.

The new vehicle safety system detects objects and other vehicles around the car and provides information of other vehicles such as location, direction and speed, allowing the driver to respond to contingent circumstances in real-time on LTE networks. The company said this technology could replace current advanced driver assistance systems that rely on only sensors which are limited in detection range and response to hidden obstacles. The new system was tested both in the lab and in real-world conditions, the company said.

LG Electronics has stepped up efforts to diversify its portfolio for new growth opportunities. It recently announced a $26 million investment plan to produce battery packs and motors for electric cars in Michigan. It is also planning to acquire ZKW, an Austrian vehicle lighting company, in a consortium with LG Corporation.
