South Korean retail giant Shinsegae is branching out of the capital area with its mega shopping mall brand Starfield.
The retailer said on Sunday it will build its fourth Starfield mall in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, at a former military base it bought for 75 billion won ($68.6 million) in May last year. The mall, commanding an area of 300,000 square meters, will be slightly smaller than the one in Goyang, which opened in August as the largest indoor shopping mall in northwestern Seoul.
The company has been expanding the Starfield chain after the first opening in Hanam, Gyeonggi Province in 2016 became a hit, drawing over 25 million visitors a year.
Shinsegae has since then opened one in COEX mall, Seoul, and most recently in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. It is readying more openings in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province and Cheongna, Incheon.
Shinsegae estimates the Changwon outlet to generate 1 trillion won and hire up to 17,000 workers.
“Starfield Changwon will host a range of shopping, cultural and entertainment facilities to establish itself as a landmark shopping mall in the region,” said an unnamed official at Shinsegae. “We hope it will serve as a central shopping hub for not just the 1 million population of Changwon but also neighboring big cities such as Busan and Daegu.”
