Samsung Electronics Co. last year was the fourth largest spender in research and development among global companies, according to this year’s issue of the European Union R&D Investment Scoreboard.

Samsung Electronics spent 12.2 billion euros ($14.4 billion) in R&D projects in 2016, fourth largest among 2,500 companies around the world with annual R&D expenditures of 24 million or more euros, the European Commission’s latest annual report said.

The South Korean tech giant slipped two notches from the second rank it has kept since 2013.

German automaker Volkswagen topped the latest scoreboard with 13.7 billion euros in R&D budget, trailed by U.S tech heavyweight Google Inc.’s parent Alphabet Inc. with 12.9 billion euros and another American tech tycoon Microsoft Corp. with 12.4 billion euros. U.S. chipmaker Intel Corp. closely tagged Samsung Electronics with 12.1 billion euros R&D expenditure.

Samsung Electronics’ smaller Korean rival LG Electronics Inc. was listed at 50th. Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor Co. ranked 77th and SK Hynix Inc., the country’s second-largest memory chipmaker, at 83th.

The U.S. was home to 36 companies included in the top 100 R&D spenders. Japan came second with 14 firms, Germany with 13 and China with seven. Korea and the Netherlands each had four companies listed in the top 100 while France, Switzerland, and Taiwan each had three firms.

The total R&D spending by the 2,500 big companies reached 741.6 billion euros, up 5.8 percent from the previous year.
