From January, employees at South Korea’s retail giant Shinsegae Group will work seven hours a day instead of the common eight hours without any impact on their payroll and regular wage hike, said the group.

It will become the nation’s first conglomerate to adopt the 35-hour working week, shorter than the legal 40-hour week working hours. Employees can start work at eight, nine or ten and go home after their seven-hour time is up.

An official from the group said that it has been preparing the change over the last two years to take the lead in changing Korea’s notoriously grueling work culture and promoting work-life balance for its employees. The group will also implement its annual wage hike despite the reduced working hours.

The country’s leading retail conglomerate engages in construction, real estate and hotel businesses as well. There are seven listed firms in the group including Shinsegae Inc., E-Mart Inc., Gwangju Shinsegae Co., Shinsegae Engineering & Construction Co., Shinsegae Information & Communication Inc., Shinsegae Food Inc. and Sinsegae International Inc.
