LG Display kicks off new production line for OLED lighting panels

LG Display has launched full-scale production of lighting system backed by the flexible and light organic light emitting diodes (OLED) illuminating material on its latest 5th-Gen OLED line at Gumi Plant P5 in Korea, the company said on Friday.

The new production line is capable of rolling out 15,000 panels a month and will be scaled up upon demand. It is now the world’s largest production line for OLED lighting panels and 30 times higher than the preceding 2nd-Gen line.

OLED lighting relies on the self-emitting nature of OLED and its incredibly thin and light weight design with low power consumption and heat contributes to product marketability.

LG Display also released its OLED lighting brand Luflex, which is coined by combining ‘lux’ for luminance and ‘flexibility’ to highlight the material’s bendable and shapeable properties. LG Display said it will work together with lamp manufacturers and car electronics companies to actively promote the brand.

According to IDTechEx, a market research firm, the worldwide market for OLED lighting panels is estimated to grow at 52 percent CAGR over the next 10 years, reaching $2.2 billion in 2026.
