Two Korean small firms campaigning to punish Hyundai Motor for stealing technology

BJC, a chemical company, held a press conference on Tuesday and argued that Hyundai Motor stole its microbial biodegradation technology used to process toxic chemicals. The company said that it had disposed toxic wastes produced in Hyundai Motor’s manufacturing facilities with its own patented technology since 2004, but the Korean auto giant abruptly terminated the contract with it after applying for a patent on the stolen technology.
BJC took the matter to the court in April and won the battle last month as the Patent Court of Korea nullified Hyundai Motor’s patent. Hyundai Motor announced it would request for a retrial.
O&C Engineering Co., a local machinery equipment producer, also told the press on the same day that Hyundai Motor has put the company nearly out of business by stealing its technology and selling it away to a multinational company.
The company argued that it developed new components for a press machine in May 2011 at the request of Hyundai Motor in March 2010, and supplied two sets of the newly developed products for free to the carmaker. But Hyundai Motor sold the technology away to another company who copied the products and later signed a contract to supply them to the automaker.
The two companies posted a petition on the website of the Korean presidential office and portal site Daum last week, with 2,800 people having signed up until now.
President Moon Jae-in has vowed that he would make related government offices address directly to the matter if a public motion received 200,000 signatories.
